Early Cold Wave Deepens in Kashmir and Ladakh as Srinagar Hits -3.1°C and Zojila -16°C

A stubborn dry spell linked to La Niña is driving temperatures lower, with forecasters warning of a further 1–2°C drop through the week.

  • Srinagar logged -3.1°C on Tuesday after -3.2°C the previous night, marking the season’s two coldest nights in succession, according to the Meteorological Centre.
  • Shopian was the coldest in the Valley at about -5.4°C, with Pulwama near -5°C, Pahalgam around -4.4°C, and Gulmarg between -1.9°C and -1.2°C in recent readings.
  • High-altitude and Ladakh locations remained in a deep freeze, including Zojila at roughly -16°C, Leh near -8°C, Kargil about -8.6°C, Drass near -10.3°C, and Nyoma around -11.8°C.
  • The MeT expects mainly dry weather through December 1, a likely additional 1–2°C decline in minimums and maximums, and shallow to moderate fog at many places in the Kashmir division.
  • Authorities advanced winter vacations for classes up to Grade 8 from December 1, and SKIMS issued advisories urging layered clothing, limited outdoor exposure, and vaccinations for vulnerable groups.
