Early Alpine Snow Shuts Swiss Passes as Cold Snap Targets Austria and Germany

Meteorologists call the cold burst an exceptional event within a long‑term shift toward later first snows.

Overview

  • Snow fell unusually low to about 1,550–1,600 meters in the western Italian Alps, a September level not recorded there since 1993, according to Italy’s meteorological society.
  • Up to roughly 20 centimeters fell in parts of the Swiss high Alps, forcing temporary closures of the Susten, Gotthard, Grimsel and Nufenen passes and causing queues of about 10 km north and 8 km south at the Gotthard tunnel with waits nearing two hours.
  • Local reports in Italy showed sharp variability, from 2–3 centimeters around Ceresole Reale (~1,579 m) to about 25 centimeters at the Serrù reservoir (~2,275 m) and an observer’s 37-centimeter reading at Casotto del Lasin.
  • Forecasts indicate additional heavy snow in Austria from Tuesday, with some guidance warning of up to 50 centimeters from Vorarlberg to Salzburg and elevated risks for mountain travel.
  • Germany’s weather service warns of a marked cooldown this week with widespread night‑time ground frost, locally down to about −3°C, prompting advisories for outdoor activity and plant protection.
