E3 Threaten UN ‘Snapback’ Sanctions Unless Iran Resumes Nuclear Talks

This ultimatum follows Iran’s halt of regular IAEA cooperation, with the E3 warning that failure to comply before the end of August will trigger reimposed sanctions.

Overview

  • E3 foreign ministers informed the UN they will trigger the snapback process by the end of August unless Iran resumes negotiations or agrees to an extension.
  • Reinstated UN sanctions would take effect through a 30-day Security Council procedure unaffected by vetoes and replace measures set to lapse on October 18.
  • Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi rejected the E3’s warning as illegitimate and said any snapback would spell the end of diplomatic engagement.
  • Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi cautioned that Tehran would consider withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty if sanctions are restored.
  • Discussions in Istanbul on July 25 did not yield a response from Iran to Europe’s extension proposal, leaving the late-August deadline unmet.
