European ministers say the chances of a deal before the Sept. 28 snapback are extremely slim.

Overview

  • Foreign ministers from France, Germany, the UK and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas met Iran’s Abbas Araghchi on the UN General Assembly sidelines in New York for final-hour consultations.
  • Araghchi also met IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi in New York as discussions center on restoring inspections and cooperation with the UN watchdog.
  • Britain, France and Germany triggered the JCPOA snapback in late August, launching a veto-proof 30‑day process to reinstate pre‑2015 UN measures.
  • European officials say any deadline extension would require direct talks with the United States, full IAEA access to nuclear sites, and a verified accounting of more than 400 kilograms of highly enriched uranium.
  • Absent a deal, the snapback would reimpose asset freezes, arms restrictions and penalties on Iran’s missile program, and Tehran has warned of retaliatory steps including a possible NPT exit.
