Overview
- Managed migration letters instruct legacy-benefit recipients, including ESA claimants, to apply for Universal Credit by a stated deadline or risk payments stopping, and the switchover is not automatic.
- Claimants who need more time can request an extension via the Universal Credit Migration Notice Helpline on 0800 169 0328, open Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm.
- The DWP says over 95% of invited ESA claimants have moved to Universal Credit, with roughly 40% receiving personalised help through the Enhanced Support Journey.
- More than 220,000 vulnerable people have received specialist assistance, which can include phone contact, home visits and support from dedicated teams and Citizens Advice.
- Income Support and income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance will end on 1 April 2026 as legacy benefits are wound down, and transitional protection applies to households moved through managed migration.
