DWP to Send October Letters as Winter Fuel Payments Roll Out to Nine Million Pensioners

Letters will confirm award amounts ahead of automatic payments expected in November–December.

Overview

  • Eligibility applies to people born on or before 21 September 1959, with entitlement based on the qualifying week of 15–21 September.
  • Most recipients will be paid automatically, with letters stating the amount and the bank account that will receive the money.
  • Eligible pensioners with taxable income of £35,000 or less will receive £200 or £300, depending on age and household circumstances.
  • HMRC will reclaim the payment from recipients whose taxable income exceeds £35,000.
  • Those who must apply can use a GOV.UK form, and phone claims open on 13 October, with advice to contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre if no letter or payment arrives by 28 January 2026.
