DWP Reaffirms Opt-In Recording for PIP Assessments, Plans Opt-Out Model Next

Ministers say provider guidance will follow only after the Department assesses the impacts.

Overview

  • Audio recording is currently available by request for face-to-face and telephone PIP assessments across all DWP providers, with details set out on provider websites and in appointment letters.
  • The Pathways to Work Green Paper proposes recording all health assessments by default, giving claimants a choice to opt out.
  • The Department has not issued instructions to Capita or any other assessment provider to begin routine recordings.
  • Officials state they will monitor the effects of making recordings standard for disability benefit assessments before any rollout decisions.
  • DWP data show 4,000 face-to-face PIP assessments in August, with in-person volumes expected to increase, while phone and video assessments continue when suitable; more than 3.8 million people receive PIP in England and Wales, and Scotland now administers Adult Disability Payment.
