DWP PIP Reviews Top 186,000 as Caseload Exceeds 3.8 Million

Most reported changes leave payments unchanged or higher.

Overview

  • By the end of July, 186,000 PIP cases had been reviewed, including 150,000 award reviews and 36,000 changes in circumstances, with 88% of reported changes resulting in an increase or no change.
  • Official data show more than 3.8 million people now receive PIP, with a 2% rise since April and 37% of claimants on the maximum award.
  • PIP award reviews are taking an average of 38 weeks; existing awards are automatically extended by up to 12 months, and long-term cases get a 10-year ‘light touch’ review via a six-page AR2 form.
  • The five most common disabling condition groups on PIP are psychiatric disorders (39%), musculoskeletal disease general (19%), neurological disease (13%), musculoskeletal disease regional (12%) and respiratory disease (4%).
  • Scotland has replaced PIP with Adult Disability Payment, with about 484,000 recipients and average new-claim processing reported at around 42 working days.
