Overview
- ESA has two types, with income-related ESA closed to new claims and existing recipients continuing under legacy rules.
- During the 13-week assessment phase, payments are £72.90 a week if under 25 or £92.05 a week if 25 or over.
- After assessment, the work-related activity group pays £92.05 a week and the support group pays £140.55 a week, worth roughly £560 a month.
- Private pension income over £85 a week reduces New Style ESA by half of the excess, though Class 1 National Insurance credits can still be awarded even if no cash payment is due.
- ESA can be paid alongside Universal Credit with offsets applied, and claimants may also qualify for PIP, while long-term income-related ESA recipients may be eligible for a Budgeting Loan after six months.
