DWP Details PIP Eligibility Criteria, Strengthens Fraud Checks

Ministers step up checks after a £330m fraud loss by clarifying which gastrointestinal and reading-related impairments qualify for PIP

Overview

  • The DWP has published comprehensive lists of qualifying gastrointestinal conditions and cognitive or communication impairments, including reading difficulties, to guide PIP claimants.
  • Personal Independence Payment awards range from £29.20 to £187.45 per week for each of the daily living and mobility components, totaling up to £749.80 every four weeks for enhanced rates.
  • Claimants must report specified changes of circumstance—such as planning trips abroad of more than four weeks—to avoid suspension of payments, fines or recovery actions.
  • Minister Andrew Western announced more rigorous identity and bank-account checks and increased counter-fraud investment after the department recorded £330m lost to PIP fraud and error last year.
  • Around 420,000 PIP claims remain under review and proposed tougher eligibility thresholds have been paused pending Sir Stephen Timms’s co-produced assessment.
