Overview
- The Department for Work and Pensions says staged, automatic Winter Fuel Payments will begin arriving in bank accounts from mid-November and continue through December.
- Payments range from £100 to £300 depending on age and household circumstances during the qualifying week in September and anyone born on or before 27 June 1960 may qualify.
- Most recipients do not need to apply and will receive a letter telling them the amount and the account used, and anyone missing a letter or payment should contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre by 27 January 2027.
- HM Revenue & Customs will reclaim the full payment from any individual with taxable income above £35,000, usually by adjusting the person’s tax code or via Self Assessment rather than asking for immediate repayment.
- Energy experts advise low-cost measures such as draught-proofing, closing curtains, keeping radiators clear and maintaining ventilation to help pensioners stretch the payment and cut winter heating bills.
