Eligible households on certain benefits receive £25 per seven‑day cold spell paid automatically within 14 working days.

  • More than half a million households now qualify, with many in areas triggered twice receiving £50 in total.
  • An extra 74 postcode areas were added on January 9, largely covering the North East and some cross‑border districts.
  • Payments are activated when the average local temperature is recorded or forecast at 0°C or below for seven consecutive days between November 1 and March 31.
  • People on Pension Credit, Income Support, income‑based JSA, income‑related ESA, Universal Credit or Support for Mortgage Interest may be eligible depending on their circumstances.
  • No application is needed, payments appear as 'DWP CWP', and residents can use the GOV.UK postcode tool to check triggers, with Scotland using a separate Winter Heating Payment.
