Overview
- From October 1, eligible pensioners in England and Wales are receiving DWP letters ahead of payments to about nine million households.
- Eligibility covers people born before 22 September 1959, with awards of £100 to £300 based on age and circumstances during the 15–21 September 2025 qualifying week.
- Individuals with taxable income over £35,000 will have the payment reclaimed by HMRC through tax code changes or Self Assessment.
- Most payments will be made automatically in November and December, but those who have never received the payment or who deferred their State Pension must claim by post (from September 15) or by phone (from October 13) by March 31, 2026.
- Payments are made per household and vary by household composition; contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre if no letter or payment arrives by January 28, 2026.
