Overview

  • Qawi died July 25 at 72 after a five-year struggle with dementia, as confirmed by his sister Wanda King.
  • Born Dwight Braxton, he grew up in Camden and discovered boxing through Rahway State Prison’s program during a sentence for armed robbery.
  • He captured the WBC light heavyweight title in December 1981 and the WBA cruiserweight belt in July 1985, earning a reputation as the “Camden Buzzsaw.”
  • Retiring in 1998 with a 41-11-1 record and 25 knockouts, he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2004.
  • In retirement he worked as a trainer, youth advocate and drug and alcohol counselor, guiding at-risk fighters and communities.
