DWD Says Summer Was Warm, Not a Record, as Heavy-Rain Alerts Hit Bavaria

The weather service reports a warmer-than-average season, with forecasts pointing to a wet start to autumn.

Overview

  • Preliminary DWD bilan places the summer mean at 18.3 °C, about 2.0 °C above 1961–1990 and 0.7 °C above 1991–2020.
  • Nationwide precipitation totaled roughly 227 l/m² (around 5–6% below average) with about 720 hours of sunshine, especially high in the southwest.
  • June and August were comparatively warm and dry, while a notably cool, wet July temporarily eased drought stress in several regions.
  • DWD issued heavy-rain warnings for parts of Bavaria (Warnstufe 2), expecting 15–25 l/m² in short periods and advising caution for flash flooding, aquaplaning, gusts and isolated hail.
  • Forecasters expect a changeable weekend as a low near the British Isles brings showers and thunderstorms, with stronger, more widespread rain likely as meteorological autumn begins and experts highlighting rising risks from persistent patterns and extreme heat.
