DWD Issues Storm Warnings as Cold Front Brings Gusts, Rain and Alpine Snow Risk

Forecasters say strong gusts, heavy rain, a falling snowline are raising the risk of injury, travel disruption, hazardous conditions on exposed heights this weekend.

Overview

  • The Deutscher Wetterdienst issued region-specific wind warnings on Friday that run from 10:00 on Friday until 06:00 on Saturday for several Bavarian counties and other areas.
  • Parts of Bavaria are under Warnstufe 2 for storm gusts with exposed locations forecast to see up to about 85 km/h while lower elevations face Warnstufe 1 with gusts near 60 km/h.
  • Coastal and northern Germany have warnings for stürmische Böen with heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms, and the Brocken is expected to face severe or even orkanartige Böen at times.
  • Models show the cold front will lower the Alpine snowline to roughly 1,500 m and possibly toward 1,000 m overnight, making first-season snow in high Bavarian Alpine areas possible though lasting accumulation is uncertain.
  • Authorities warn of falling branches, flying debris and travel impacts on roads and exposed peaks, and initial forecasts indicate a turn to milder, drier conditions in the following week.
