DWD Issues Level-3 Warnings as Slow-Moving Storm Drenches Southern Germany

Up to 100 liters per square meter are expected through Thursday, creating flood and landslide risks with early Alpine snow.

Overview

  • Warnings cover Unterfranken in Bavaria and the Karlsruhe and Stuttgart regions in Baden-Württemberg, with the DWD also cautioning parts of southern Hesse about locally extreme rainfall.
  • Forecasters expect 50 to 80 liters per square meter in many areas and up to 100 locally, raising the danger of overflowing streams, flooded cellars and traffic disruptions.
  • Snowfall is forecast in the Alps down to around 1,800 meters with up to about ten centimeters of new snow in high terrain, and strong gusts are possible over the uplands.
  • Bavaria’s flood service reported some gauges briefly above Meldestufe 1 and said reaching Meldestufe 2 in spots cannot be ruled out, while earlier local warnings were lifted on Tuesday.
  • Northern and eastern regions are set for drier, sunnier spells later this week according to current models, contrasting with ongoing heavy rain in the south.
