Dwayne Johnson is set to star in a new A24 film, 'The Smashing Machine', directed by Benny Safdie. The film is a biopic based on the life of former UFC Champion Mark Kerr.
Johnson and Safdie first discussed the idea for the film in 2019, but it was put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The project was revived after Johnson's 'Jungle Cruise' co-star Emily Blunt encouraged him to pursue it.
Johnson has expressed a desire to take on more dramatic roles that 'explore humanity and struggle', indicating a shift away from his usual blockbuster films. However, he clarified that this does not mean he is abandoning big-budget movies entirely.
The Smashing Machine' will be Safdie's first solo directorial project. Previously, he has collaborated with his brother Josh Safdie on films such as 'Uncut Gems' and 'Good Time'.
The release date for 'The Smashing Machine' has not yet been announced.
