DVSA to Introduce CPR and Defibrillator Questions in Car and Motorcycle Theory Tests

Backed by campaigners alongside the Resuscitation Council UK, the initiative seeks to boost cardiac arrest survival by equipping drivers with essential first-aid knowledge.

Overview

  • DVSA confirmed that from early 2026, car and motorcycle theory tests will include enhanced CPR and AED questions.
  • Official learning guides have been updated to feature example questions on correct chest compression depth (5–6 cm) and universal access to public defibrillators.
  • The partnership with Resuscitation Council UK and Save a Life programmes was driven by campaigners including Professor Len Nokes after the death of his daughter.
  • Over 40 000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur annually in the UK with survival under 10%, but studies show CPR and defibrillation within 3–5 minutes can raise survival rates to about 70%.
  • The written additions aim to educate the 2.4 million learner drivers each year without creating a mandatory practical CPR requirement.
