Overview

  • Cars, motorbikes, car-derived vans and dual-purpose vehicles towing caravans or trailers must stick to a 60mph motorway limit, down from the standard 70mph.
  • Buses, coaches and minibuses over 12 metres long and goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes are also confined to 60mph on motorways in England and Wales.
  • Built-up area limits remain at 30mph in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland and 20mph in Wales, with local councils able to impose lower limits where clearly signed.
  • Vehicles with more than eight passenger seats and goods vehicles above 3.5 tonnes must fit speed limiters, which can prevent them from reaching maximum permissible speeds.
  • The DVSA now accepts Apple Pay and Google Pay for on-the-spot fines to make penalty payments faster and more convenient.
