DVLA Warns Over £1,000 Fines After Survey Finds Many Over-70s Delay Licence Renewal

The agency is stepping up reminders with renewal letters sent before licences expire.

Overview

  • A new Scrap Car Comparison survey reports 27% of motorists aged 70 or over waited at least four years after turning 70 to renew, which breaks the law.
  • UK rules require drivers to renew at 70 and every three years thereafter, while all photocard licences otherwise must be renewed every 10 years.
  • The DVLA says it issues renewal reminders, including a D46P form sent around 90 days before a driver’s 70th birthday, with paper copies available at Post Offices if a letter is not received.
  • Most drivers can renew online for £14, but some must use Post Office or postal routes, such as after a name change or for Northern Ireland residents, with the Post Office service costing £21.50.
  • Driving on an expired licence can bring up to six penalty points and a fine of up to £1,000, while uninsured driving carries an unlimited fine and possible ban.
