DVLA Warns of £1,000 Fines for Undeclared Eye Conditions

Drivers who omit conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa or glaucoma risk fines up to £1,000 with potential license revocation

Overview

  • Motorists must declare retinitis pigmentosa, diplopia, nyctalopia, diabetic retinopathy treated with laser, blepharospasm and glaucoma to the DVLA.
  • Bus, coach and lorry drivers face additional reporting requirements for loss of an eye, visual field defects, glare-sensitive cataracts, macular degeneration and monocular vision.
  • Drivers must report if a GP, eye specialist or optician advises they do not meet the legal vision standards of reading a number plate at 20 metres, no double vision and a normal field of vision in at least one eye.
  • V1 forms for cars and motorcycles and V1V forms for heavy vehicles can be submitted via GOV.UK or by post to declare medical conditions.
  • Failure to comply can result in fines up to £1,000, penalty points, license revocation and legal prosecution.
