DVLA Urges Drivers to Renew Licences Online Ahead of Expiry Deadlines

Great Britain motorists face fines, penalty points, invalid insurance, possible vehicle seizure if they do not renew through GOV.UK within licence expiry deadlines.

Overview

  • Standard renewals cost £14 via the GOV.UK online service and most applications result in a new photocard arriving within about a week.
  • Drivers aged 70 or due to turn 70 within 90 days can renew online for free and must reapply every three years under current rules.
  • Motorists may continue driving while their renewal is processed only if they have a doctor’s support, held a valid licence, drive under previous licence conditions, applied within one year of expiry, and are not disqualified or have a recent medical refusal.
  • Failure to renew in time can lead to up to six penalty points, fines of up to £1,000, voided insurance and possible vehicle seizure.
  • Applicants must register or log into a GOV.UK account and provide an email address, addresses for the last three years, their National Insurance number and a valid UK passport number if changing their licence photo.
