DVLA Issues Final Warning as ‘75’ Number Plates Roll Out on 1 September

The agency underscores strict plate standards, blocking offensive combinations as non‑compliance risks MOT failure plus £1,000 fines.

Overview

  • New ‘75’ registrations will be issued from 1 September 2025 through February 2026 across England, Scotland and Wales.
  • Legal plates must be reflective, show black characters on white (front) and yellow (rear), have no background pattern, display the supplier’s name, and carry the BS AU 145e mark for plates fitted after 1 September 2021.
  • Drivers face fines of up to £1,000 and a failed MOT if plates are incorrectly displayed or do not meet DVLA specifications.
  • DVLA screening has removed hundreds of potentially offensive or political ‘75’ combinations, with examples reported such as BA75 ARD, OR75 GY, SH75 TTY and EU75 WAR.
  • Research indicates many motorists do not understand plate codes, while personalised registrations remain subject to the same rules and can be revoked if later deemed inappropriate.
