DVAC Re-Adds S. P. Velumani as Accused in ₹98.25-Crore Civic Contracts Case

DVAC notified the Madras High Court after obtaining sanctions for several officials, with central approval for two IAS officers still pending.

Overview

  • The agency filed an additional affidavit naming the AIADMK MLA in the probe into 2014–2018 Chennai and Coimbatore corporation contracts.
  • Legislative Assembly Speaker M. Appavu granted sanction to prosecute Velumani on February 12, 2024, and the State approved action against multiple corporation engineers.
  • DVAC said three charge sheets were filed before the special MP/MLA court, returned for defects, and re-presented after rectification.
  • The case cites alleged irregular bus-route relaying, outsourcing of drivers, cleaners and tipper lorries for garbage clearance, and tender manipulation to outsource 302 staff nurses.
  • A 2022 High Court order had quashed the FIR against Velumani yet allowed his inclusion upon new material, and the court has posted a contempt plea for September 12 as the Centre has not sanctioned prosecution of IAS officers K. S. Kandasamy and K. Vijayakarthikeyan.
