Dutch Foundation Launches Berlin Class-Action Over TikTok Data and Youth Manipulation

Affected German users can soon register online for age-tiered compensation of up to €2,000

Overview

  • Stichting Onderzoek Marktinformatie filed the suit on June 3 at Berlin’s Kammergericht, accusing TikTok of unlawfully collecting and analyzing users’ highly personal data.
  • The foundation alleges TikTok and parent company Bytedance covertly build behavioral and personality profiles for advertising and other commercial purposes without users’ knowledge.
  • It claims TikTok’s recommendation algorithm fosters manipulation and dependency among children and young people.
  • German consumers can join the class-action online once the Federal Office of Justice officially registers the lawsuit, with publication expected in the coming days.
  • Compensation is set at €2,000 for users under 16 at sign-up, €1,000 for those aged 16–21 and €500 for those over 21.
