Dutch Coalition Talks Stall as Mediator Urges D66-CDA Policy Blueprint

A first plan from D66 and the CDA is due by December 9 to try to draw other parties into a workable majority.

Overview

  • Mediator Wouter Koolmees reported no viable majority and asked Rob Jetten’s D66 and Henri Bontenbal’s CDA to draft a joint policy outline, warning a government is unlikely by Christmas.
  • Jetten’s preferred quartet with CDA, VVD and GreenLeft–Labour would command 86 seats, but VVD leader Dilan Yesilgoz refuses to govern with GreenLeft–Labour.
  • Yesilgoz backs a right-leaning option with VVD, CDA, D66 and JA21 that totals 75 seats, leaving it one short of a majority and positioning Jetten left of prospective partners.
  • The October 29 vote left D66 and PVV tied on 26 seats, with PVV losing 11 seats and returning to opposition as the broader far-right presence held roughly steady due to gains by FvD and JA21.
  • Caretaker leader Dick Schoof remains in charge during talks, and Koolmees will step back from the process to return to running the national railways.
