Dutch Cities Tighten Speeds and Post New Warnings in Quick Road-Safety Push

Short-term measures take priority over costly redesigns pending formal audits.

Overview

  • Amsterdam will set 30 km/h on part of the Prins Hendrikkade and has canceled the planned reconfiguration, citing lower urgency after earlier fixes.
  • Physical traffic-calming on that corridor is deferred to major maintenance scheduled for 2028–2032, with new 30 km/h signs used in the interim.
  • Groningen will install fluorescent 50 km/h and sharp-curve warnings at the ‘Mariokartbocht’ during an overnight closure from 20:00 on 29 Sept to 06:00 on 30 Sept.
  • The province has ordered a G‑VVI safety audit of the bend, with findings expected later in the autumn to guide any further measures.
  • Haarlem will lower the limit to 30 km/h on 132 roads from 1 Oct 2025 and projects a 20–30% drop in crashes, especially benefiting people walking and cycling.
