Dustin Johnson-Led Group Seeks $100M as LIV 2.0 Survives on Fragile Player Commitments

BC Partners has offered up to $300 million for a player-owned relaunch conditional on resolving large unpaid-contract claims.

Overview

  • More than 10 players led by Dustin Johnson are pressing the Saudi Public Investment Fund for over $100 million in unpaid-contract or severance payments and are unlikely to sign the current restructuring while those claims remain unresolved.
  • BC Partners has pledged roughly $300 million to back a smaller, player-owned LIV 2.0 but wants an initial roster of about 30 to 40 players and has so far seen only about 15 tentative commitments reported on Oct. 25.
  • Bankruptcy filings show players are collectively owed more than $400 million and that LIV paid roughly $15.6 million in executive retention payments in the weeks before its Chapter 11 filing.
  • The PIF says it ceased investing and has not negotiated directly with the players, leaving the sovereign fund as the senior lender with the power to wind down the business if a deal is not reached.
  • The league’s fate now depends on settlements of player claims, additional player sign-ups and court approvals before the PIF’s wind-down trigger around Oct. 30, a sequence that will determine whether players recover money or pursue other careers.
