Overview
- The town council inaugurated the plaques on November 27 with a reception for victims’ families attended by councillors from all represented parties.
- Each ground-level plaque names the victim, includes the phrase “Víctima de” with the year of death, and links via QR code to a biographical file in Basque and Spanish.
- The initiative was proposed by PP councillor Carlos García and funded under a PNV–PSE–PP budget agreement after the 2023 shift in municipal control.
- The commemorations recall cases from 1978 to 2000, including three National Police officers gunned down on October 3, 1980 in an attack that remains unresolved.
- The municipality says plaques for people born in Durango who were killed elsewhere will follow, and some relatives continue to press for fuller truth and justice.
