Duplantis, McLaughlin-Levrone Named World Athletes of the Year in Monaco

The Monaco ceremony cemented their record seasons, spotlighting fresh scrutiny of commercial tours that sidelined field events.

Overview

  • Armand Duplantis completed an unbeaten year across 16 meets, set four pole vault world records and raised the mark to 6.30m at the Tokyo world championships, also adding a fifth straight Diamond League title.
  • Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone won the 400m world title in 47.78 seconds, the No. 2 time in history, becoming the first athlete to claim world crowns in both the 400m flat and 400m hurdles while extending a two-year unbeaten run.
  • Both overall winners also topped their discipline categories, with Duplantis voted men’s field athlete of the year and McLaughlin-Levrone named women’s track athlete of the year.
  • Other honorees included Nicola Olyslagers as women’s field athlete, Emmanuel Wanyonyi as men’s track athlete, and out-of-stadium awards for Sabastian Sawe and María Pérez.
  • Duplantis used his acceptance remarks to criticize the collapsed Grand Slam Track tour for trying to exclude field events, renewing debate over event inclusion and athlete treatment.
