Duke Energy Files Final FERC Application to Relicense Bad Creek for 50 Years

The filing follows capacity upgrades to 1,680 MW, with Duke expecting a FERC decision before the 2027 license expiration.

Overview

  • The current Bad Creek operating license expires in July 2027, and Duke says it expects FERC to rule in 2027 ahead of that date.
  • A 2020–2024 refurbishment added 320 MW by upgrading each of the four pump-turbines, bringing total capacity to 1,680 MW.
  • Bad Creek has operated since 1991 near Salem in Oconee County as Duke’s largest grid-scale storage resource, moving water between reservoirs to meet peak demand.
  • Duke reports consultations with more than 70 stakeholders to shape the proposed 50-year license for the facility.
  • The company continues to evaluate a second powerhouse, Bad Creek II, at about 1,700 MW that could be in service as early as 2034 if pursued.
