Duisburg Zoo Names Baby Koala 'Yoorana' After Nine Months of Care

The Duisburg Zoo has officially named its female koala joey 'Yoorana,' meaning 'to love' in an Aboriginal language.
Yoorana was born on June 26, 2024, and her name was chosen by the zoo’s animal care team as part of their tradition of using Aboriginal names.
At birth, Yoorana weighed just two grams and was the size of a gummy bear; she now weighs approximately 1.5 kilograms.
The zoo monitors all its koalas at least twice weekly to ensure their health and development, showcasing its specialized care practices.
Duisburg Zoo is one of only four zoos in Germany housing koalas and is recognized as a European leader in the breeding and care of these eucalyptus-eating marsupials.
