The driver, identified as 27-year-old Ali Mused Adel Mohamed, was arrested for DUI, possession of cannabis for sale, and illegal possession of an exotic animal.
Spider monkeys are critically endangered and illegal to own as pets in California, where they require specialized care to survive.
The monkey, believed to be one month old, was temporarily cared for by animal services before being transferred to the Oakland Zoo for proper care.
