Dubuque Man Arrested in 2003 Colorado Cold-Case Killing With Extradition Underway

Investigators from Thornton with help from Dubuque linked Robert McClain to the 2003 stabbing through a yearlong probe that also produced a felon-in-possession case.

Overview

  • Dubuque police took 55-year-old Robert McClain into custody Monday on an Adams County, Colorado warrant in the killing of 29-year-old Rosa Arguello.
  • Authorities report that extradition to Colorado is in progress so the case can proceed with the 17th Judicial District Attorney.
  • Arguello, a member of the Hopi Tribe and a mother of three, was found on Oct. 17, 2003 in a field near the 12000 block of Quebec Street with multiple stab wounds, including through the heart.
  • Thornton police began focusing on McClain in October 2024 with assistance from Dubuque police, executing a search that led to a felon-in-possession charge.
  • Thornton Police Chief Jim Baird thanked Dubuque officers and said the department will work with prosecutors, while records show McClain previously received a 15-year sentence in a 2014 case after pleading to reduced charges.
