Overview
- The Roads and Transport Authority opened a three-lane bridge on Sunday, July 26, that carries up to 3,600 vehicles per hour from Al Khail Road toward Al Asayel Street via Al Wasl Club Street.
- RTA officials say the Oud Metha and Al Asayel Streets Development Project is about 90% complete with two tunnels and an additional bridge scheduled to open by the end of August.
- When finished the scheme will raise Oud Metha Street capacity from roughly 10,400 vehicles per hour in both directions to about 15,600 per hour and cut corridor travel time from about 20 minutes to roughly five minutes.
- The works cover improvements at four major junctions, two tunnels totaling about 4.3 km within a 14 km programme of new roads, bridges, service lanes and ramp upgrades to reduce traffic overlaps and improve access.
- The RTA frames the upgrades as support for dense residential and service areas including Zabeel, Al Jaddaf, Oud Metha and Umm Hurair where the served population is expected to exceed 420,000 by 2030 and where shorter commutes should ease access to hospitals and clubs.
