Dubai Metro Turns 17 as Ridership Soars

RTA expands passenger amenities to ease congestion, advance construction of two major new lines linking more districts.

Overview

  • The Dubai Metro marked its 17th anniversary on Wednesday and the network reported 136.5 million riders in the first half of 2026, underlining a sharp rise in usage.
  • The Metro opened on September 9, 2009, with the Red Line followed by the Green Line in September 2011 and has become a daily lifeline for commuters and expatriates.
  • Sheikh Mohammed laid the Blue Line foundation in June 2025 for a 30 km route with 14 stations set to open on September 9, 2029, and the Executive Council approved the Dh34 billion Gold Line in April 2026 for a 42 km, 18-station underground route planned for September 9, 2032.
  • RTA has rolled out people-focused services that expand the Metro beyond transport, including the WO-RK coworking space at BurJuman station (June 2024) and dedicated rest areas for delivery riders (August 2026).
  • The system’s driverless technology earned a Guinness World Record in February 2012 as the world’s longest driverless metro network, and ongoing line expansion aims to add capacity and new connections across Dubai.
