Dubai Approves Rules for Driverless Heavy Vehicles, Names Five Pilot Routes

The move sets safety-led pilot rules to test freight automation on select corridors.

Overview

  • The RTA approved a comprehensive regulatory framework setting licensing procedures, trial assessment criteria and technology standards to ensure road safety.
  • Initial pilots will run on routes serving Jebel Ali Port, Al Maktoum International Airport, the Jebel Ali Port Rail Freight Terminal, Dubai Investments Park and Ibn Battuta Mall.
  • Trials will be closely monitored with a mix of safety‑driver‑supervised runs and designated driverless operations, and the RTA has not announced start dates.
  • Alongside the framework, the RTA launched the Logisty platform with TruKKer for commercial transport services, fleet management and on‑demand booking and tracking.
  • The initiative supports Dubai’s 2030 transport and logistics targets, with officials citing a fleet of about 61,290 heavy vehicles and goals to cut emissions and raise the sector’s economic contribution.
