Drunk Motorcyclist Hits Five Women During Salta Pilgrimage

Authorities say the victims were unregistered in the province’s pilgrim-tracking system, exposing a gap that limited preventive assistance.

Overview

  • A motorcycle struck five women walking toward the Catedral Basílica de Salta at about 5:00 a.m. on Sunday near the Termo Andes plant on National Route 9, and emergency teams transported two to Hospital Joaquín Castellanos and three to Hospital San Bernardo.
  • All five women were reported with non-life-threatening injuries and are hospitalized and out of danger after receiving on-scene care.
  • Police administered an alcohol test to the motorcyclist that returned 0.53 grams of alcohol per liter of blood and detained him before placing him at the disposal of the on-duty court.
  • Officials said the women had started from Apolinario Saravia and were traveling independently without registering in the Mapa Peregrino / 'Soy Peregrino' app, so they did not appear in the province’s preventive accompaniment scheme.
  • Provincial authorities urged pilgrims to register in the tracking platform and asked drivers to slow down and watch for walkers, noting wider safety and coordination consequences for large road pilgrimages if more participants remain unregistered.
