Drone Video Leads to Charges in Burglary of Moving Freight Train on Chicago’s South Side

Drone surveillance during a Norfolk Southern cargo-theft operation supplied the key footage that guided the arrests.

Overview

  • A railroad-operated drone recorded two people breaking into a container on a moving train near 60th Place and Stewart Avenue around 6:30 a.m. on Dec. 19.
  • Deputies arrested Shaun Smythe, 25, and Marcus Moore, 26, near the 300 block of West 60th Place after the suspects jumped from the train.
  • Errol Miller, 44, fled in a minivan and was stopped and arrested near the 100 block of West 87th Street following a pursuit.
  • All three men were charged with burglary, and Miller also faces an aggravated fleeing and eluding charge, according to the sheriff’s office.
  • Smythe was released after a Dec. 20 hearing, while Moore and Miller remain jailed for alleged violations of pretrial release from other cases, with court records listing Jan. 8 as their next court date.
