Drone Strike Briefly Halts Operations at Russia’s Azot Chemical Plant in Perm Krai

The facility is a major producer of dual-use nitrogen chemicals located far from the front lines.

Overview

  • Regional governor Dmitry Makhonin said drones hit the Berezniki plant overnight on Oct. 2–3, causing a short stoppage in the technological process.
  • Operator JSC Uralchem reported a brief suspension at 20:45 on Oct. 2 and said the plant is now running normally with no casualties and no environmental risk.
  • Local outlet ASTRA cited residents who heard two powerful explosions, and officials said a two-apartment residential building was damaged without injuries.
  • Outlets reported the strike was carried out by Ukrainian drones, while the governor referred to enemy drones and Russia’s Defense Ministry did not mention activity in Perm Krai.
  • Azot supplies ammonia, urea and ammonium nitrate used in agriculture and explosives, and the incident follows other recent drone attacks on Russian chemical facilities deep inside the country.
