Drone Sighting Halts Flights at Berlin’s BER as Night Ban Is Temporarily Lifted

Officials issued a rare night-flight waiver to help the airport clear delays following a confirmed drone sighting.

Overview

  • Operations were paused in the evening after a confirmed drone was spotted near the southern area of BER, with reports indicating roughly a two-hour disruption around 20:00–22:00.
  • Eleven arrivals were diverted to Leipzig, Dresden and Hamburg, and three flights to London, Birmingham and Stockholm were canceled.
  • Police and federal officers searched with ground patrols and two helicopters; authorities later said the drone was no longer detectable.
  • To work through the backlog, the aviation authority granted an exemption to the night-flight ban, allowing departures until 1:00 and landings until 4:00.
  • The incident comes as unauthorized drone sightings at German airports increase, with a similar disruption in Munich earlier in October and multiple drone-related hindrances recorded by air traffic authorities this year.
