Overview
- Investigators discovered parts of an unknown drone east of Lake Steinhude about one kilometer from the Wunstorf Bundeswehr airbase and have been aware of the find since 14 September.
- State Criminal Police (LKA) teams and police units are conducting a large search of the uninhabited area to recover more debris and secure evidence.
- The LKA says there are currently no signs of immediate danger to the public, but officers continue the operation because the search area is large.
- Authorities do not yet know who owned the drone or its purpose and will run forensic checks on recovered parts to look for cameras, explosives, radio gear, or identifying serial numbers.
- The incident adds to a string of suspected sabotage and suspicious drone sightings in 2026 and could prompt tighter security around Wunstorf and other air transport hubs used by NATO.
