Overview
- The Deutsches Rotes Kreuz formally opened the Luckenwalde population-protection hub on Thursday, centering the site on the federally funded “Mobiles Betreuungsmodul 5000” that can shelter and serve up to 5,000 people.
- The site covers roughly 34,000 square meters and can hold about 15,000 Europallets of equipment, including mobile kitchens, sanitary containers with wheelchair access, field hospital components and more than 120 specialist vehicles.
- DRK logistics staff say a mobile hospital can be prepared for airlift within 72 hours and the Bundesamt für Bevölkerungsschutz und Katastrophenhilfe estimates moving the full stock would need about 250 truck trips.
- More than 90 percent of materials have been relocated to Luckenwalde, the air-freight area is scheduled to enter service in November and the DRK expects the full transfer to finish by year-end with roughly 20 full-time staff and a target of 40 volunteers.
- The DRK financed the site itself at about €40 million while the MBM 5000 was paid by the federal government, a setup that highlights the need for sustained funding, regular training and exercises to keep the hub ready for national and international crises.
