Drivers Back Action on Pavement Parking as Fife Starts Issuing Fines

Ministers promise to outline next steps soon in response to renewed public pressure.

Overview

  • An RAC-commissioned survey of 1,709 drivers finds 83% want new rules, with 42% favoring an England-wide ban and 41% preferring tougher local powers.
  • The poll, conducted by research firm Online95 in June and July, reports only 13% oppose any ban and 66% see pavement parking near their homes.
  • Fife Council starts enforcing Scotland’s national prohibition from 1 September with £100 penalties after a warning period, with limited exemptions in place.
  • Outside London, English councils currently need street-by-street Traffic Regulation Orders to restrict pavement parking, a route described as costly and slow.
  • Motoring and walking groups including the RAC and Sustrans are urging reform, and a Westminster Hall debate on the issue is expected this week hosted by Lib Dem MP Helen Maguire.
