Drivers Arrested in Delhi–Mumbai Expressway Hit-and-Run That Left Couple Trapped for 8 Hours

NHAI faces a sanctions review after ignored show-cause notices over alleged patrol and CCTV failures.

The accident happened after the police vehicle into the truck on NH-44 in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar.
For nearly eight hours, the mangled car sat on the side of the expressway, its doors jammed shut, its occupants bleeding inside, as hundreds of vehicles passed.

  • Police arrested dumper driver Mobin Khan and Ertiga driver Ajit Singh in the Nuh crash that killed Lachhi Ram and Kusum Lata; both were later granted bail and their vehicles were seized.
  • Investigators say the WagonR rear-ended a dumper at 11:52 pm and was struck again by an Ertiga about 22 minutes later, with the wreck discovered only at 7:38 am.
  • Officers cited rash driving and speeding, saying the dumper braked suddenly and the Ertiga hit at about 100 km/h, and noted that both drivers fled without alerting authorities.
  • NHAI issued show-cause notices to the patrol contractor and the supervising engineer for monitoring lapses; after no reply within three days, officials said they will recommend penalties including termination or fines.
  • Following public anger and family complaints of absent patrols, police added a second patrol car on the Hilalpur–Jhirka stretch and NHAI said round-the-clock patrolling and CCTV monitoring have been reinforced.
