Police say Shannon N. Godbout remains in custody pending a reconstruction-led investigation.

Overview

  • Hopkinton police say a black SUV left its eastbound lane on Route 138 around 7:21 a.m., struck two telephone poles and other objects, and hit Roderick “Rory” MacLeod, 70, who was walking his dogs.
  • MacLeod, a Grammy-nominated bassist and Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame inductee known for his work with Roomful of Blues, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where he died; his dog was not injured and ran home.
  • Officers arrested driver Shannon N. Godbout, 41, at the scene and reported finding numerous illegal narcotics and packaging materials associated with distribution.
  • Godbout faces preliminary counts of driving so as to endanger resulting in death and possession of Schedule I/II narcotics with intent to distribute, third-plus offense, with additional charges possible.
  • Police cite more than 100 prior arrests, 82 court warrants and about 40 traffic citations for Godbout, and say the state police accident reconstruction team and the attorney general’s office are reviewing the case, with court records indicating she was held without bail and set for arraignment Tuesday.
