Driver Reports 'Blackout' Before BR-116 Crash That Killed Singer Mauri

Police are still determining the cause of the three-vehicle collision near Miracatu that left two people dead.

Overview

  • The van’s driver told the Federal Highway Police he suffered a momentary blackout before the rear-end collision, an account authorities say remains under investigation.
  • PRF reported the van struck the rear of a truck stopped on the shoulder with mechanical problems, and a third car was also hit at about 2:30 p.m. on km 372–373 of BR-116 in Miracatu, São Paulo.
  • Deaths were confirmed for Amauri ‘Mauri’ Prudêncio de Lima, of the duo Maurício & Mauri and brother of Chitãozinho & Xororó, and crew member Douglas Riva.
  • The van carried nine passengers plus the driver, with six injured — five with moderate trauma and one with light injuries — while two occupants were unhurt, and Maurício is physically well according to the family.
  • The group was returning from a show in Curitiba to Indaiatuba, and police in Miracatu registered the case as vehicular homicide without intent as tributes and calls for privacy continue.
