Driver Dies After Truck Falls From Marginal Tietê Bridge as Road Crashes Hit Multiple Brazilian States

Officials opened investigations into related crashes that caused fuel leaks, cargo spills, road closures, and injuries.

Overview

  • Josemberg Alves de Oliveira, 35, died after suffering cardiorespiratory arrest en route to the hospital when a truck carrying four people plunged from the Ponte Atílio Fontana on São Paulo’s Marginal Tietê.
  • Firefighters deployed nine vehicles and a Military Police helicopter to the bridge crash, rescuing three survivors who were initially conscious and prompting an express-lane shutdown with congestion reaching the Castello Branco highway.
  • On BR-040 in Barbacena (MG), a box truck loaded with five tonnes of fireworks collided with a semi, trapping the driver, who was extricated by firefighters and taken by Samu as causes remain under review.
  • A gasoline tanker and a car collided head-on on BR-101 in Laje (BA), overturning the truck and leaking fuel, injuring the tanker driver; PRF reported a full closure overnight with traffic fully restored by about 6:30 a.m.
  • In other cases under inquiry, a runaway truck damaged a Divinópolis furniture store after an alleged brake failure with no injuries, two men died in a motorcycle–truck crash in Arraial do Cabo (RJ), and a 3-year-old was fatally struck by a bus in Ubatuba (SP) in a case logged as culpable homicide.
