Driver Charged After Factory Lane Crash in Manchester That Flipped Car and Destroyed Lamppost

Matthew Thomas has been bailed to appear at Manchester & Salford Magistrates Court on 9 December.

Overview

  • CCTV captured a white Kia traveling at high speed on Aug. 21 in Blackley before hitting the kerb, tearing out a lamppost and overturning.
  • Greater Manchester Police charged Matthew Thomas, 43, with dangerous driving, driving over the alcohol limit, no insurance and no licence.
  • The driver and a passenger were rescued from the upside-down, smoking car and were not seriously injured, according to local reports.
  • Fire crews from Blackley and Philips Park arrived around 5:15 p.m., made the area safe and handed the scene to police after about 30 minutes.
  • Residents and Councillor Pat Karney are pressing for immediate safety measures on Factory Lane, citing DfT data of seven crashes since 2013 and severe damage to parked cars reported by a nearby garage owner.
